”Green growth is positioned in the structure that should be continued regardless of changes in the regime, and it will become the global paradigm.”
This is what Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Green Growth Young Soo-gil said in his congratulatory address at the seminar held in commemoration of third anniversary of Institute for Climate Change Action.
Institute for Climate Change Action (Chairman: Jang Jae-yeon) hosted on June 5 a seminar celebrating its third anniversary at the Press Center in Seoul attended by about 100 specialists and officials related to climate change. Following the congratulatory remarks by Chairman Young Soo-gil, three specialists presented keynote papers. They include ‘Discourse politics on green growth’ (Gu Do-wan, Director of Environment and Society Research Institute), ‘Virtuous circle of green growth, environment and economy’ (Yu Bok-han, Director of Green Growth Planning Group, Presidential Committee on Green Growth), and ‘Outcomes, limitation and alternatives of low carbon green growth’ (Ahn Byeong-ok, Director of Institute for Climate Change Action).
In his opening address, Chairman Jang Jae-yeon of Institute for Climate Change Action said, “We have been pursuing programs with core agenda of green growth or environment, but we haven’t been successful thus far. It is because the volition to protect environment while maintaining sustainable development under difficult situation was disregarded in many cases rather than being nurtured and extended.”
Chairman Jang added, “But today’s event is significant as it is attended by officials of both the incumbent and previous governments. We will watch whether environment will be adopted as the key agenda in the next government.”

In response, Chairman Young Soo-gil said in his congratulatory address, “Having adopted the mid-term goal of realizing it by 2020, the government enacted the emission trading act on May 2. This is the expression of its intention to continually maintain the green growth paradigm.”
And Chairman Young Soo-gil stressed, “It is notable that both the ruling and opposition parties supported the emission trading system in unison.”
But Chairman Young cited, “Green growth should be pushed forward jointly by all stakeholders, but it is now approached by government initiative, and no consultative group is organized yet.” He noted that people recognize importance of green growth, but they don’t put it into practice.
