The Environment Ministry will arrange outstanding trainees of the course to serve at environment-related international institutions as interns.
The Ministry of Environment (Minister: Yoo Young-sook) held on August 17 the commencement ceremony of the ‘2012 international environmental specialist training course’ at Institute of East and West Studies in Yonsei University in Seoul. The training course is designed to provide support to excellent talents for seeking jobs in environment-related international organizations.
The specialist training course is provided for 150 hours, and a part of outstanding trainees who successfully fulfilled the course are provided with chances of serving at international organizations as interns for up to 6 months.
Since 2009, 165 persons fulfilled the specialist training course, and 46 persons of them had served at environment-related international organizations, such as the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
Out of 134 applicants, the Environment Ministry selected 50 trainees for this year through document review and interviews. And they fulfilled the training course for 150 hours in 8 weeks starting on June 25.
Its curricula included professional subjects, such as climate change, biological diversity and environmental trade, as well as subjects for improving capability needed for serving at international organizations.
Trainees learned professional knowledge from specialized lecturers, including professors and high-ranking officials, while obtaining know-how and capability needed for serving at international organizations by conducting various projects and practice.
The Environment Ministry will select 15 outstanding trainees in this year and arrange them to serve at environment-related international institutions, such as the UNEP, OECD and CBD. The ministry will support their round-trip airfare and living expenses during their stay in foreign countries.
A trainee at the course said, “I had experienced difficulty in acquiring knowledge and information needed for serving at international organizations though I had such hope. But now I have confidence as I obtained quality education and diversified information from leading specialists in this course.”
