The first GCF board of directors meeting will be held in Geneva, Switzerland…government official will attend the meeting as an alternate member.
The Ministry of Strategy and Finance said on August 21 that a government official will attend the first board of directors meeting of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) as an alternate board member. The board of directors meeting is set to be held on August 23~25 in Geneva.
The board of directors consists of 24 member countries, including 12 advanced countries and 12 developing nations. The meeting will also be attended by 24 officials from 24 alternative board member countries like Korea. Having been selected as an alternate member country in Asia, Choi Jong-gu, International Economy Managing Officer at the Strategy and Finance Ministry, will attend the meeting.
Although the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change decided to hold the meeting late April at its general meeting held last year in Durban, South Africa, the first GCF board of directors meeting has been postponed to late August this year, due to a delay in selecting board member countries in Asia and Latin America. Major subjects to be discussed at the first GCF board of directors meeting are expected to include the procedure of selecting the host country of the GCF secretariat, selection of co-chairpersons of the board of directors, regulations of the board of directors, and future work plan.
Given that it is the first board of directors meeting to be held after the GCF convention was sealed and is predicted to substantially affect attraction of the GCF secretariat, the government intends to aggressively reflect Korea’s position in discussing major subjects related to selection of co-chairpersons, regulations of the board of directors, work plan, and procedure of selecting host country of the GCF secretariat.
The government will also actively publicize logics for establishing the GCF secretariat in Korea to 24 member countries of the GCF board of directors and 24 alternate board members, vis-à-vis competitors, such as Germany, Switzerland, Mexico, Poland and Namibia. To this end, the Ministry of Strategy and Finance will present a proposal for attracting the secretariat and show publicity video.
Through face-to-face meetings with members and alternate members of the GCF board of directors, the Ministry intends to gain their support by maximally promoting Korea’s merits through effective delivery of logics of establishing the GCF secretariat and publicity of Songdo, the candidate host city.
In particular, it will use the board of directors meeting as a chance of building an international network with GCF members and officials who can be helpful for attracting the GCF secretariat to Korea.
