Forensics Team investigated on the 18th to find out the cause of the fire
There was a large fire in the Jongro-Gu Insadong area which affected 8 buildings and 19 stores.
The accident occurred on the 17th at around 8.30pm in the afternoon in a restaurant on the third floor. The related building has a restaurant on the first floor, and stores and pubs on the second and third floor. It was only after extra investigations were done that the fire station could decipher which floor the fire had originally started up on.
At the time of the fire, the LPG and transformer that were being used in the restaurant exploded and caused a massive flame to rapidly spread to nearby buildings. It is yet unknown as to what triggered the explosion initially.
Including the building that originally caused the fire, a total of 8 buildings were affected. Furthermore, there were 12 segments in the building of which 7 caught on fire, and a total of 19 stores were affected. Luckily there were no casualties.
In relation to this, on the 18th, a joint forensics team was created for figuring out the point of ignition, and the number of people who were involved in the accident.
25 people from the National Institute of Scientific investigation, Seoul Office, Jongro Fire Department, Korea Electric Power, Electrical Safety Corporation, and Korea Gas Safety Corporation were placed in the forensics team.
Police reported that “during the time of the fire, the 50 or so customers and 8 workers at the restaurant immediately evacuated the building” and that “there weren’t any people in the second or third floor of the building as it was a Sunday.”
Meanwhile, police and the forensics team revealed that they would be looking into reports of the accident to figure out the exact cause of the fire.
