The MOF will hold a seminar to collect opinions on conducting legal survey on marine living resources.
While countries are vying to take superior position in securing marine living resources, the government moves to set up strategies for securing such resources consistently and systematically.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF, Minister: Yoon Jin-sook) said that it will hold on July 23 a ‘Seminar for Conducting Legal Survey on Marine Living Resources’ at Hotel Riviera in Daejeon. The seminar is designed to collect extensive opinions from industry, academia, research organizations and government to successfully conduct survey on marine living resources needed for fostering the marine bio-industry.
Hosted by the MOF and co-sponsored by Korea Institute of Marine Science & Technology Promotion (KIMST) and Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology (KIOST), the seminar is expected to be attended by some 80 experts and executives at industry, academia and research institutes.
At the seminar, Dr. Kang Gil-mo at KIOST will present the plan of survey on marine living resources (draft), and it will be followed by discussion by specialists at universities and research institutes, and members of the establishment planning team of National Institute of Marine Resources.
The MOF said it will conduct the survey putting focus on utilizing useful marine living resources.
The government has conducted multiple survey and research projects, including basic survey on marine ecosystems, survey on coastal wetlands, and a long-term research on marine ecosystems. But, these are different from the survey on marine living resources as they were intended to conserve and manage marine ecosystems and environment.
The survey on marine living resources is a legal survey to be conducted based on the ‘Act on securing, managing and using marine living resources’ enacted in July 2012. The act is designed to secure and manage marine living resources comprehensively and systematically, and to use them efficiently and sustainably, intensifying sovereignty over resources. The survey will be conducted throughout entire seas of Korea in every 5 years starting in 2014.
An official at the MOF said, “Obtainment of marine living resources is a pivotal condition for creating a new marine industry. The Ministry will provide unreserved supports for these projects, including expansion of budget, training of professional manpower, and establishment of infrastructure.”
