The City authority will install such generators at public-use sport facilities to prevent unexpected blackout.
These sport facilities can provide uninterrupted games through 1,000∼1,500kW gas turbines and UPS systems.
As part of its policy of preventing unexpected blackout at public-use sport facilities, the Seoul City government will install city gas-fired turbine generators at sport complexes and stadiums.
The Seoul City government said on August 14 that it worked out a plan for preventing incident of suspending sport games due to power failure at sport facilities after conducting safety inspections on electric facilities at sport facilities, including Jamsil Baseball Stadium, Mok-dong Stadium, Jangchung Stadium and Seoul Gocheok Dome Baseball Stadium.
The City authority decided to initially install gas turbine generators at Jamsil Baseball Stadium and Mok-dong Stadium in 2014 to enable them to continue sport games even during blackout, taking account that these facilities consume larger amount of power than other facilities. It considers to install 1,500kW and 1,000kW gas turbine generators at Jamsil Stadium and Mok-dong Stadium, respectively.
When gas turbine generators are installed at these baseball fields next year, they are expected to enable these stadiums to continue games even during blackout, while contributing to mitigating shortage in power supply by generating power during peak power usage hours.
In addition, the City authority plans to replace lightings at the 30-year old Jamsil Main Stadium with advanced lamps on phased basis in an effort to increase its use by professional soccer teams in Seoul and for cultural performances.
As it is remodeling Jangchung Stadium as a multi-purpose facility that can accommodate various indoor sport games and cultural performances, the City authority will install emergency generators and replace lightings with instant restarting lamps based on opinions of sport and artistic performance experts.
While conventional lightings take 15~20 minutes for restarting, instant restarting lamps can restart instantly without causing any inconvenience to activities and audience.
The City authority will install uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems at Seoul Gocheok Dome Baseball Stadium, which is under construction, to enable it to accommodate international sport games and HDTV relay broadcasting even during blackout. It once considered a plan of replacing the emergency diesel generator with a gas turbine generator, but it abandoned the plan as the diesel generator was already ordered on a turnkey basis.
Spectators can enjoy sport games or events at Seoul World Cup Stadium without experiencing any inconvenience due to power failure because gas turbine generators and UPS systems are already installed there as the stadium was constructed in relatively recent years.
