President Park held a summit meeting with Vietnam’s President Truong Tan Sang…stated collaboration for nuclear power plant development in the summit declaration.
President Park Geun-hye of Korea who is on a state visit to Vietnam held on September 9 a summit meeting with President Truong Tan Sang of Vietnam at the Presidential Palace in Hanoi, and they adopted the summit declaration, stating expansion of cooperation between the two countries for nuclear power plant development programs in Vietnam.
In the declaration, chief executives of the two countries highly evaluated collaboration between the two countries for peaceful use of nuclear power, and they welcomed that the two nations approved the ‘Overall Joint Proposed Plan (OJPP)’ in 2011 and started the preliminary feasibility study in June 2013.
Recognizing that sharing Korea’s experiences and technologies in developing nuclear power plant will contribute to fostering nuclear power industry in Vietnam, governments of the two countries agreed to continue collaboration for development of nuclear power plants in Vietnam.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) underlined that it is an exceptional thing to mention in the summit declaration the feasibility study, which is being conducted jointly by the two countries, unlike preliminary feasibility studies for the first and second nuclear power plants (proposed by Japan and Russia, respectively) conducted by Vietnam alone.
The two countries will jointly conduct preliminary feasibility study in two candidate sites in central region of Vietnam for the third nuclear power plant by the end of 2014. When the preliminary study is completed, the two sides will decide construction of the nuclear power plant after receiving approval of the National Assembly, conducting a full-scale feasibility study and concluding commercial contract.
An official at Nuclear Power Plant Export Promotion Division at the MOTIE said, “The OJPP is used as a basis for adopting Korea-type nuclear power plant model (APR1400) by the Vietnamese government. Reconfirmation of nuclear power plant development in the summit meeting is clear expression of the Vietnamese government’s intention to collaborate with Korea.”
