Daesung Energy Supports Hope House Project hot
Daesung Energy (President: Lee Chong-moo) concluded on June 15 an MOU with the One-roomed House Consulting Center in Volunteer Service Capability Development Institute, a representative civic group for supporting inn-type one-roomed house residents in Daegu. Under the MOU, which was signed at the head office of Daesung Energy, the company will provide the ‘Hope House Project’ with funds needed for remodeling houses and to buy fixtures. The Hope House Project is a program that helps poor people improve their living conditions. The ‘Hope House Project’, the first of its kind in Korea, is designed to give hope and will to support themselves to poor people who live in shabby inn-type one-roomed houses by helping them live in better housing environment when they have desire for improving such conditions. The project provides them with new purchased rental houses called ‘hope houses’ for 6 months for rents similar to those of one-roomed houses where they have been living. The One-roomed House Consulting Center plans to support about 20 residents of one-roomed houses a year to help them improve housing conditions by raising funds and providing them with interest-free loans. It will also provide them with various additional benefits, including free medical care service, side dishes and information on job opportunities. Under the memorandum, Daesung Energy will support fund for remodeling shabby inn-type one-roomed houses and to buy fixtures while residents are staying at new ‘hope houses’ for 6 months. President Lee Chong-moo of Daesung Energy said, “We are happy to participate in the program that supports needy people who are willing to and capable of getting out of narrow one-roomed houses. We hope this project will serve as a role model for improving housing conditions of less privileged people.” Daesung Energy has been cooperating with the One-roomed House Consulting Center to help neglected people by providing them various volunteer programs, such as clean one-roomed house program that replaces wallpapers and floor linoleum, donation of cooling systems and kimchi (pickled vegetables), and monitoring living conditions. The purchased rental house is provided to low-income people by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs and Korea Land & Housing Corporation (LH). Daesung Group – For the environment always comes first. hot
Daesung Group (CEO, Younghoon David Kim) participated in The 9th International Green Energy Expo Korea 2012 to tell attendees about various green projects the group is conducting. This is the Daesung Group’s booth, where the corporation displayed information on its LFG (landfill gas-to-energy) and RDF (refuse-derived fuel) businesses. People in attendance gave these project favorable reviews. One of the big draws of the Expo was Korea’s first solar power tower system, developed by Dasung Energy Co., Ltd. VIP participants from abroad were especially interested in this project. Daesung Group has more than 60 years of know-how and technological expertise. Now, the corporation moves forward to deliver total energy solutions, focusing on energy areas as natural gas and renewable energy. Presenting Korea’s future in renewable energy to famous foreign minds through solar power generation systems was a highlight of the Expo. The solar power tower system uses 450 heliostats, 2 meters in length and width, to concentrate sunlight at the top of the tower. The solar receiver, placed 50 meters high, generates heat up to 1000℃. Daesung Group has invested time and effort unsparingly to create and improve the landfill gas-to-energy business. Landfill gas is created when waste buried under ground decays to produce gases that can be used as a resource. Fifty to sixty percent of landfill gas is methane (CH4). Methane can be used to generate electricity and as a heating fuel. The most important aspect about the landfill gas business is its ability to reduce methane gas emissions released into the air, thus helping to prevent global warming. Methane is 21 times toxic than carbon dioxide on the global warming index. As a result, the CDM Project was developed and has prospered thanks to the climate change treaty. *CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) Project – allows developed countries to implement emission-reduction projects in developing countries, enabling them to earn reduction credits and gain CERs (Certified Emission Reductions) by reducing greenhouse gases. Dasung Energy Co., Ltd. also presented the RDF business model, which produces energy by making solid fuel from indrustrial waste or home waste. The technology to make refuse-derived fuel (RDF) uses combustible waste and is a great way to help improve the environment by replacing fossil fuels, which produce greenhouse gases. Lastly, Daesung Group presented its foreign green energy business. Since 2003, the corporation has supplied a solar photovoltaic (PV) energy generating system to Mongolia through the SolarWin Project. The goal of the project is to install the system on a 3.3-million-square-meter site and to provide electricity and draw well water for afforestation. The World Energy Council recently selected the Daesung Group’s GEEP Project as a model energy project in the Asia-Pacific region for three years, from 2008 to 2010. The project has become the standard model for prevention of desertification in the world. The photovoltaic module, placed in the middle of the Daesung Group’s booth, shows Expo visitors what a green future can be. Daesung Group will devote itself both to the domestic energy market and to providing energy to developing countries through renewable energy projects. Written by: energy.Korea.com more

Tower style solar power (heat) generation system by Daesung Energy hot
Daesung Group (CEO, Younghoon David Kim) announced that its core subsidiary Daesung Energy has been selected as the main contractor of “200kW class solar power (heat) generation system development” business from the Ministry of Knowledge Economy (MKE). According to Daesung Energy, the MKE has selected Daesung Energy as the main contractor of `Strategic Technology Development Challenge in 2008`. The purpose of this challenge task was to obtain technology in new & renewable energy that has high potential for growth as the part of low-carbon green-growth policy. Using Korea Institute of Energy Research as the consigned research organization, the MKE is proceeding the solar power generation technology development business. Starting this year, the total of 11.6 billion won (government contributions of 7.15 billion won, civilian portion 4.5 billion won) will be committed to this business. And, the first Korean tower style solar power generator with 60m in height will be erected using at least 2.3ha of land. This will be the largest solar power generation facility in the country and the location is being explored in Daegu and the surrounding areas. In meantime around the world, the technology development of new and renewal energy using the Sun was focused on the light of sun. However, using the heat rather than the light of sun became known to be more efficient and economical on 10MW or larger, the solar heat power generation technology advanced rapidly. Thus, Spain and other countries in Europe and the United States have more cases of commercial installation of 10MW class or higher. Also, areas near equator in the Middle East and the desert regions in Africa, where abundant solar energy is available, are going forward with constructions of larger scale solar power generation facilities. Looking at this trend around the world, the research and technology development in solar power generation is a bit late for Korea compared to other countries. There has been a case with a small 10kW class solar power generation facility in Korea. However, the 200kW class power generation facility is the first and is considered as the ground-breaking scale. While the photovoltaic generation utilizes photoelectric effect to directly convert sun’s energy to electrical energy, the solar power generation deploys reflectors, collects hundreds and thousands degree of high temperature. Then, it uses the heat for various cycles of generations. This technology is expected to grow annually at 6.4% (EIA estimation) until 2020. Around 2020, it is expected that the solar power will be responsible for about 2,000GW of generation around the world. Also, it is forecasted that a huge market exceeding 5 trillion won per 1GW class generation equipment will be formed. That is why so many countries are scrambling to seek the first-mover advantage in this market. From this business, Daesung Group is planning to set its technology as the standard in small scale solar power generations and plans to maintain the leading position as the solar power generation operator by developing entry level models. This will be accomplished through accumulating technology by linking the existing fossil fuel power generation with the development of mid-to-large combined cycle power generation system. Also, in the mid to long, term, the company plans to integrate the advanced technology such as sun tracking, and condensing lights and others so that it can achieve 17% improvement in generation efficiency. Based on the technology, it is plans to expand the business to solar energy rich overseas regions like Mongolia, Sahara Desert. Thus, it can achieve the target market share which is 1% (20GW, 100 trillion won) of the global solar power generation market by 2020. Younghoon David Kim (CEP, Daesung Group) stated his vision, “The reason Daesung Energy is selected as the main contractor of solar power business by the government is the result of accumulated technology based on continuous investment in green energy. We are going to strategically develop businesses related to new and renewal energy such as photovoltaic, solar heat, and wind power energies. Thus, we will continuously grow the new and renewal energy business as our flagship division for the group.” Currently, Daesung Group has applied an in-house developed new and renewal energy solution, “Solar-win System” in Mongolia. The project is called the Green Eco Energy Park which utilizes about 331ha of land near Ulaanbaatar, the capitol of Mongolia. Daesung Group has been receiving technological recognition in new and renewable energy, and the project has been selected as the `noteworthy project in Asia-Pacific region` by the World Energy Council (WEC). Daesung Group, brightens Ethiopia with solar energy hot
Daesung Group (CEO, Younghoon David Kim) is holding a completion ceremony at a village elementary school in Bulchana, Ethiopia. This is to celebrate the completion of `Solar Energy Support Project`, which supplies electricity and drinking water to 1,100 households using a facility running new and renewable energy in Ethiopia. Locations of the project, Bulchana village and Boledena village, are about 200km southeast of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. Both villages have the population of 500 and 600 which are considered as large village, but this is the first time they are getting the electricity. In Ethiopia, 40% are equipped with electricity and only 25% of people in farming areas are supplied with clean drinking water. Daesung Global Network, a subsidiary of Daesung Group in charge of plant construction, was to undertake the project to deliver electricity and drinking water using new and renewable energy to people in the back alley of civilization. One 64kW class photovoltaic (PV) electric power generation equipment was installed in the elementary school in each respective village. And, 3kW class photovoltaic electric power generation equipment in a family center, and 200W class photovoltaic street lamps were installed. Due to insufficient underwater, the plan to pump up underground water to supply drinking water using PV electricity had to be scraped. But, it was replaced by interconnecting water pipes to a nearby water reservoir about 5.6km away. The electricity generated by PV system is supplied to battery charging system in a school and homes. The home batteries supplied to about 1,100 households can turn on 1~2 lights per home. Once charged, the battery can be used for 5~6 days, thus enabling people for night activities. Since the house structure was weak and the usage of electric home appliance was low, this method was chosen to provide electricity to as many people as possible at a minimum cost. A new drinking fountain was built within a school. Now, students can study at the school and are able to carry water after school instead of missing school to get water from many miles away. The battery charging station and watering station were built in a school to improve the school attendance of children. As part of `Lighting Asia & Africa: LANA` Project supported by the National Assembly, `Solar Energy Support Project for Ethiopia` is to provide photovoltaic electric power generation equipment to underdeveloped countries in Asia and Africa and is executed by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). The elementary schools in Bulchana and Boledena were built by KOICA. Daesung Group started the project on June of last year, and after 16 months of construction, the regional electricity and drinking water problems were resolved. Daesung Group installed SolaWin System (hybrid power generation using photovoltaic and wind power) in Mongolia to prevent desertification and to deliver electricity and drinking water to the people. In addition to Mongolia and Ethiopia, Daesung Group has supplied SolaWin System and other new and renewable energy to Kazakhstan and Bangladesh to pave the ways to improve the quality of life for the people. Furthermore, the company is trying to spread the use of SolaWin System to Congo and other African countries. Source: etoday more
