Held at Rancho Mastatal, an environmental learning center and retreat located in the last virgin rainforest of Costa Rica’s Puriscal County. Participants will stay at the center where they build using natural building techniques, including bamboo and cob, and support the use of renewable energy systems. Rancho Mastatal practices and promotes living responsibly in the tropics, while educating its visitors about the significance and majesty of the world’s disappearing tropical forests. Take advantage of this great opportunity to enjoy one of Costa Rica’s most undiscovered regions while learning about renewable energy.
In our ninth year at Rancho Mastatal, this winter’s workshop builds on the success of our past workshops. Our program is focused on learning through hands-on work. We’ll spend about one-third of our time in the classroom, studying renewable energy technology basics. The rest of our time will be in the field or lab, getting our hands dirty, learning by doing. The course is taught in both English and Spanish. Price includes dorm bed or camping, all meals and in-country transportation. Private accommodation may be available at additional cost (contact Rancho Mastatal). Ask about options for family members not taking the workshop.
Participants must by ready to meet outside the San Jose, Costa Rica airport by 3:00 p.m. at the latest on Tuesday, January 3, 2012, and will be returned to the same airport by 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 11, 2012. Please plan your flights accordingly, with leeway for the vagaries of travel. Those not at the meeting place at the appointed time on January 3 will need to make their own arrangements to get to the ranch.
This class fills each year that it’s offered. Enrollment is very limited, so register early to reserve your space.

A 60-minute Webcast on January 10, 2012 at 11 a.m. pacific, 1 p.m. central, 2 p.m. eastern.
How will the strained China-U.S. trade relationships, dwindling U.S. federal support for renewables and global economic instability impact the solar market?
In this webcast we will hear from key industry players who are navigating the minefield of large-scale solar power project development in 2012. How difficult is it to find financing in this turbulent and uncertain environment? Is permitting equally challenging? What about obtaining a PPA?
Project developers and analysts will present their strategies for getting projects in the ground when times are tough. Attendees will get tips on how to navigate the vast and rocky terrain that leads to the signing of the deal.

With an exclusive focus on biomass utilization in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Nevada, the Pacific West Biomass Conference & Trade Show is the largest event of its kind in the world.
The mainland Pacific West—from Southern California to British Columbia—has huge amounts of biomass resources. The region is home to dozens of biomass power plants, advanced biofuels startups, research hubs and vital industry associations.
This events brings together area producers of biomass-derived electricity, industrial heat and power with waste generators, municipal leaders, utility executives, technology providers, equipment manufacturers, investors, policy makers and more.
The Pacific West Biomass Conference & Trade Show program will include more than 70 speakers, including technical presentations on topics ranging from anaerobic digestion and gasification to combined heat and power and large-scale biomass combustion, within the structured framework of general session panels and four customized tracks. Hear the following presentations from Stoel Rives on Monday, January 16 during concurrent tracks from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m.:
Lee Smith will moderate the discussion panel “Capitalizing on Energy Rich Waste Streams and Technical Approaches for their More Varied Conversion” during Track 2: Biomass Power and Thermal.
Greg Jenner will serve as a panelist for “Capitalization Strategies in Challenging Financial Environment” during Track 4: Project Development.
